As a regional capital, Nice was once an exclusive destination for many of the wealthy aristocracy of Europe. Today the city’s population is more mixed and it is a cauldron of activity, especially by tourists and travelers. Most come to sample one of many beaches or enjoy the nightlife. Nice is not the place for those looking for rest and relaxation. For who want to experience the thrills of Monaco or Cannes, Nice is a good jump off point for exploration of those vibrant attractions as well as the Côte d’Azur. Those wanting a taste of rural French life can leave the city and reach the villages of Provence in no time.

The most pleasant and reasonable times to come to Nice would be May and June, if you desire to avoid the press of the larger crowds and the oppressive heat of later summer. As you move into September and October conditions remain decent as well. The big attraction for many is the anticipated Carnival festivities that take place in February. Nice’s climate is generally mild and you can expect temperatures to stay around 59°F/15°C. During the winter months, including November through February, the lows will reach about 41°F /5°C. Summer high temperatures will peak at 104°F /40°C in the months of July through August.

Travel in and to Nice

Nice-Côte d’Azur international airport, located just three and half miles of the city, services numerous flights to European and international destinations. Various bus lines connect Nice with French and other continental destinations. There are also high-speed train lines running along the coast and into Paris. There are also regular ferries that run from Nice to Corsica.

Local Transportation

Regular bus services are available for runs between the airport and the city train station. Connecting buses take travelers to popular locations like the beaches and the promenade des Anglais. Any other schedules should be confirmed at the central bus station in the Général Leclerc. Car rentals may be another option for some travelers and there are ample services available for further exploration of the surrounding region. But, the center of the city is better seen by foot than by car.

Av. Jean Médecin runs south from near the Gare Nice Ville (the main train station) to place Masséna. The modern city centre, the area north and the west of the place Massena, includes the pedestrianised shopping streets rue de France and rue de Masséna. The bus station is located three blocks east of place Massena.

Promenade des Anglais follow the gently arced beachfront from the city centre to the airport, 6Km west, Vieux Nice (old Nice) is delineated by blvd Jeab Jaurés, quai des États-Unis and, east, the hill known as Colline du Château.

The wealthy residential neighbourhood of Cimiez, home to outstanding museums, is just north of the city centre.
