From 1610 to 1717 the building was the Palace of the Dukes of Savoy before becoming Royal Palace and the Government Palace, the seat of the Prefecture of Nice in 1860. Since the inauguration of the new administrative centre to the west of Nice, it has been home to the President of the General Council and the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes. Visitors are not allowed insisde the building today – except during the Heritage Days – but its exterior architecture, columns and windows are a beautiful gallery enlightened in the scenery of the Old Town.
